Tips on Avoiding Dental Injuries

Posted .

If you want a top-notch oral health and smile, then you need to care for your teeth and gums regularly as well as do your best to avoid dental injuries. Now, it’s tough to completely prevent dental injuries because accidents happen, but our dentists, Dr. Tom Pinnavaia and Dr. Joshua Blake are happy to give you the tips you need to reduce your chances of having dental injuries. Those tips are:

-Wear a mouthguard: If you participate in high-contact sports and activities, then it’s important to wear a mouthguard. A mouthguard can cover your arch of teeth and protect it when you get hit in the face with an elbow, knee or other hard object. In fact, it can help you avoid knocked-out and broken teeth.

-Use fluoride: Fluoride is a natural mineral that strengthens your tooth enamel, making it a tough shell. The tougher the enamel is, the reduced chance you have of suffering a dental injury. So, make sure to expose your teeth to fluoride regularly.

-Avoid chewing on hard things: Chewing on things like pens, pencils and your fingernails can apply unnatural pressure to the teeth and cause tooth cracks and fractures. It’s best to avoid this habit as much as possible.
