Dental Sealants: The Way to a Protected Smile

Posted .

Do you wish there was a way to keep your smile free from tooth decay? If so, you’re not alone. Many people despise tooth decay because it’s so painful and inconvenient. Fortunately, there are ways you can prevent cavities and keep your smile in tip-top shape! One of those ways is by placing dental sealants over your teeth.

Dental sealants are protective, invisible coatings that are painted on the back molars. This is recommended because the back teeth are more difficult to clean. They have deep pits and fissures that your toothbrush is not likely to deeply clean. Tom Pinnavaia will usually place the sealants on the teeth after your six-month check-ups because he knows the teeth are perfectly clean.

Your dentist will place the sealants by first deeply cleaning the teeth, drying them, and then placing an absorbent shield around them to keep them dry. Next, he will coarsen the surfaces of the teeth with a special dental solution; doing so will help the sealants bond to the enamel. Your dentist will then rinse and dry the teeth. Finally, he will paint the sealants on the surfaces and then will harden them with a special light.

These shells will protect the teeth because they create a barrier between the enamel and the bacteria in your mouth. If the bacteria don’t have access to the teeth, they can’t create dental caries.
